Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) will host its annual Festival of Frights beginning October 5, offering a variety of Halloween-themed events throughout the city. The festival includes activities such as costume parties, rock climbing, a murder mystery event, arts and crafts sessions, and themed trails.

The schedule starts with Barktoberfest on October 5 at Riverbend Park, where attendees can participate in canine costume contests and meet local pet vendors. On October 11, teams can compete in a Lego Halloween Build-Off at Burton Street Community Center. Other events include Creepy Climbing on October 17 at Tempie Avery Montford Community Center and Kooky Spooky Toddler Day on October 24 at Stephens-Lee Community Center.

Additional activities are planned through the end of October. These include Spooky Spikes Volleyball Open Play on October 25, Grove Street Spooktacular from October 27-31 featuring daily themed activities, and a Murder Mystery Party: Jazz Age Jeopardy on October 29 at Harvest House Community Center.

Booville Halloween Party will take place on October 23 at Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center. On Halloween night itself, families can attend Shiloh Trunk or Treat at Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center, Haunted Parking Lot on the Hill at Stephens-Lee Community Center, and Halloween Spooky Bingo at Burton Street Community Center.

To mark Día de los Muertos, APR will host an outdoor movie night for teens on November 1 at Stephens-Lee Community Center with crafts and a screening of “Coco.”

“While Ashevillains can stop in for a spell at these events, APR offers many additional ways to explore, connect, and discover throughout the month without chilling frights. Browse the current program guide in English and en espanol and search classes and events online,” according to Asheville Parks & Recreation.

APR also notes that there are more opportunities beyond the Festival of Frights for residents to participate in holiday events, weekly clubs, classes, and other programs throughout Asheville.

For further information about available programs or to browse upcoming events online or through their program guide in multiple languages, residents are encouraged to visit Asheville Parks & Recreation’s website or subscribe to their newsletters.
