Anice Smith has been recognized by Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) as part of its APR Innovators series, which highlights staff members who make significant contributions to the community through their work in recreation programs and park management.
Smith began her tenure with APR in 2011 as a summer camp counselor at Burton Street Community Center during her first college summer break. She continued in similar roles at Malvern Hills Park and Walton Street Park through 2014. In 2015, she became a program leader at Dr. Wesley Grant Southside Sr. Community Center, later advancing to facility supervisor positions at both Grant Southside Center and Tempie Avery Montford Community Center. Since 2021, she has worked exclusively at Avery Montford Center.
Discussing her achievements, Smith said, “I have a passion for working with kids and creating a fun and safe environment. I love the kids getting opportunities to experience a variety of activities at an affordable cost.” She has organized youth programs such as Fun Days Out, holiday camps, and spring break camps that include activities like swim play, Parents’ Night Out, bingo, game nights, and talent shows.
When not working, Smith enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her son, family, and friends.
Explaining her motivation for working with APR, Smith stated: “I enjoy connecting with children and their families. I appreciate offering programs and events for families to attend and enjoy together.”
