Summer Diemer, a Fiscal Technician who joined Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) in 2023, is being recognized for her contributions to the department. Diemer provides specialized support in areas such as purchasing and contracting, accounting, administration, and human resources. She cited APR’s engaging culture and mission to serve the community as reasons for joining the team.
Diemer reflected on her experience working at APR: “To me personally, working for parks and rec means working with a great group of people who help make parks accessible and offer diverse programs that allow everyone to engage with nature, stay active, learn, and create lasting memories. Many of my fondest memories are of playing in parks and on sports fields. It was an easy way for a homeschooled kid to form friendships and learn how to collaborate with others.”
She described her professional growth since joining APR: “Working with APR has really pushed me to grow professionally. I’ve consistently been challenged to think creatively and critically when working with staff on contracts and purchase orders. I’ve also gotten much better at analyzing data to make decisions and at pulling together info from multiple individuals to create a more complete picture.”
Among her accomplishments, Diemer highlighted efforts related to Riverside Cemetery: “The recovery work at Riverside Cemetery, which has made it possible for the community to visit their loved ones again. I am also proud of the tireless work that made most of our parks accessible so quickly after Helene’s destruction.”
Diemer noted that Tropical Storm Helene had an impact on her approach: “Helene significantly impacted how I interact with vendors by prompting a shift to a more empathetic and flexible approach. The storm’s aftermath brought unforeseen challenges and delays – and for me, it highlighted the necessity of practicing understanding and grace, as vendors and suppliers also navigate personal and professional difficulties.”
When not working, she spends time with family participating in community activities like hiking and swimming.
Diemer summarized her motivation: “I love that working for the department allows me to serve my community and makes it fun in the process. I believe our work significantly enhances the quality of life in Asheville. From maintaining green spaces and playgrounds to organizing activities and programs, we contribute to a healthier, happier, and more connected community.”
