The City of Asheville announced on April 29 that applications are now open for several board and commission positions, with a deadline set for May 17 at 5:00 p.m.

These boards and commissions play a role in shaping policies, priorities, and programs that affect the local community. The city is encouraging residents to contribute their perspective, leadership, and knowledge by applying for available seats.

Vacancies are currently available on multiple bodies including the African American Heritage Commission, Asheville-Buncombe Air Quality Agency Board, Asheville-Buncombe Riverfront Commission, Board of Electrical Examiners, Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority, Design Review Committee, Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority, Historic Resources Commission (three vacancies), Housing Authority of the City of Asheville, Neighborhood Advisory Committee, and Planning and Zoning Commission (three vacancies).

Asheville’s City Hall at 70 Court Plaza serves as the central administrative hub for municipal operations according to the official website. The city uses its City Plans initiative to engage with the community over long-term planning efforts focused on sustainable growth and equitable development according to the official website.

Asheville operates under a council-manager government structure where elected officials—including a mayor and six city council members serving four-year staggered terms—oversee policy decisions while a city manager handles day-to-day operations according to the official website. Municipal services within city limits are delivered through coordination among departments such as Public Works, Water Resources and Planning according to the official website.

Residents interested in areas like housing, sustainability, art or civic oversight are encouraged by officials to consider these opportunities. “Put your perspective, leadership, and knowledge to work by serving on a City of Asheville board or commission,” said officials in their announcement.
