CITY OF ASHEVILLE: Buncombe County and Veterans Council to host LIVE Memorial Day Ceremony

City of Asheville issued the following announcement on May 17.

The City of Asheville and Buncombe County will host a Memorial Day Ceremony at 3:00 p.m. May 30, 2022 at the Roger McGuire Green in Pack Square Park.

The ceremony will feature short readings by Brothers And Sisters Like These Veterans Writing Group who write to heal the wounds of war. Pastor Spencer Hardaway, LT. Col. (Ret.) US  Army Chaplain will give the keynote address. 

Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer and Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Chairman Brownie Newman will participate in a Recognition of Service. The joint Asheville Police and Fire Department Honor Guard will present and retire the colors, and will escort the Mayor and Dr. Vivianne Wersel, Gold Star Families, in presenting Memorial wreaths in honor of the members of the Armed Forces who have sacrificed their lives in service to this Country.  

US Marine Veteran Ric Ledford will sing the National Anthem and perform Taps.

Steve Henderson, US Marines, Vietnam will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Additional ceremony participants include Stephanie Young, Director of the Charles George VA Medical Center, Donna Culp US Air Force President, WNC MOAA, and Ted Minnick, US Army, Vietnam.

Allan Perkal, US Air Force, Vietnam, will be the Master of Ceremonies. 

The public is also encouraged to attend a 10 a.m. May 30 Memorial Day Ceremony at the Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 962 Old US Highway 70, Black Mountain.
