City of Asheville issued the following announcement on June 16.
On June 20, 2022 Asheville City offices will be closed in observance of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.
Juneteenth, officially observed each year on June 19, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas, were told they were free, marking the end of slavery in the United States. Congress passed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday on June 16, 2021
City services.
- Sanitation and ART bus services will not be affected. Buses will run on their normal schedule.
- Waste collection will run on a normal schedule, but the Sanitation office will be closed June 20.
- All parks will be open on a regular schedule.
- All community centers, summer camps, and administrative offices will be closed June 20.
Emergency services
All public safety services, including police, fire and emergency response, will operate to normal schedule – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Water Resources staff will be available for water related emergencies 24 hours a day over the holiday weekend. Customers can call the customer service line at 828-251-1122 to report water related emergencies, leaks, breaks and no water calls.
Community & Regional Entertainment Facilities
The WNC Nature Center, Aston Park Tennis Center, Asheville Municipal Golf Course and The Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville box office will not be affected by the holiday closures and will be open per normal schedule.
