Haywood County government offices to close January 1 for New Year’s Day

Most Haywood County government offices will be closed on Thursday, January 1, 2026, in observance of New Year’s Day. The closure includes the Solid Waste Department, White Oak Landfill, Materials Recovery Facility, and Convenience Centers. All facilities are scheduled to resume normal business hours on Friday, January 2.

For additional information or questions regarding the closures, residents are advised to contact the County Manager’s Office at 828.452.6625.

In related education news for Haywood County, recent data from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction shows that among senior students in local school districts who took the science portion of the ACT during the 2022-23 school year, 26% were considered ready for college. For juniors taking the same test, 27.9% met college readiness standards (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/). In reading, 42.1% of seniors and 40.8% of juniors achieved scores indicating college readiness (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/). For math, both seniors and juniors had similar results with 26% and 28.3%, respectively (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/).
