Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) has received Primary Stroke Center Certification from The Joint Commission and the American Stroke Association. This recognition means HRMC meets national standards for stroke care, ensuring that patients in Haywood County have access to evidence-based treatment at any time.

The certification process included an onsite review by Joint Commission surveyors, who assessed the hospital’s compliance with standards related to program management, clinical care, patient education, and performance improvement. Surveyors observed staff and conducted interviews across several departments.

Hospital leaders and staff from emergency care, nursing, clinical education, patient safety, and other areas worked together to prepare for the review. Their efforts focused on strengthening policies, training staff, and establishing systems to meet national benchmarks. Ongoing monitoring of outcomes and continued staff education are also part of their approach.

“Earning this certification reflects the dedication of our physicians, nurses and staff who are committed to delivering timely, high-quality stroke care,” said HRMC’s chief executive officer Sue Shugart, FACHE, CPPS. “It affirms that patients in Haywood County can receive nationally recognized stroke services close to home.”

HRMC’s chief nursing officer LaCrystal Gordon stated: “Stroke care is complex and time-sensitive, requiring seamless teamwork at every step. This certification validates the systems and practices our team has put in place to provide the safest, most effective care for our patients and families.”

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), strokes occur frequently in the United States—about once every 40 seconds nationwide.

HRMC also holds accreditation as a Chest Pain Center. These designations indicate that HRMC is prepared to respond quickly to emergencies such as strokes or heart attacks.
