Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) and Haywood Community College (HCC) held a Lunch and Learn event on the HCC campus, focusing on vein health. This session was the first in an educational series at the college.

General surgeon Joshua Rudd, DO, led the session and discussed chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), its causes, symptoms, risk factors, and available treatments. CVI is a condition where leg veins do not efficiently return blood to the heart, which can result in swelling, aching, varicose veins, and skin changes.

“This type of education is so important for our community,” Dr. Rudd said. “Many people suffer silently with vein-related conditions, not realizing that effective treatments are available. Bringing these conversations into the open helps reduce stigma and empowers people to seek care.”

The Lunch and Learn series is offered monthly by HRMC at no cost to participants. Local experts present information on health topics relevant to residents of western North Carolina.

“We are grateful to Haywood Community College for hosting this session and for the ongoing partnership we share,” said Sue Shugart, chief executive officer for HRMC. “Together, we are committed not only to improving the health of our community but also to strengthening the healthcare workforce for our county.”

The partnership between HRMC and HCC extends beyond educational events. It includes training programs and professional development opportunities aimed at building a stronger healthcare workforce in the region.

The Haywood Vein Center provides treatment for CVI and other vein conditions discussed during the program. More details about these services can be found at MyHaywoodRegional.com/vein or by calling 828-452-8346.
