Haywood Regional Medical Center announced on March 9 that it will host a free Lunch and Learn event titled “Protect Your Health: Understanding Colorectal Cancer and the Power of Early Screening” at Haywood Community College on Tuesday, March 31. The session is scheduled from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM in the Juniper Building, Classroom 6105, located at 125 Sawmill Drive in Clyde.
The event aims to educate community members about colorectal cancer, emphasizing the importance of early screening and awareness. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States but is also highly preventable and treatable when detected early. Regular screenings can help identify potential issues before symptoms appear, improving long-term outcomes for patients.
Al Mina, MD, chief medical officer and general surgeon at Haywood Regional Medical Center, will lead the discussion. He will cover topics such as risk factors for colorectal cancer and how early detection can significantly improve patient outcomes.
“Providing opportunities for education and open conversation around topics like colorectal cancer helps empower individuals to take an active role in their health,” said Sue Shugart, FACHE, CPPS, chief executive officer of Haywood Regional Medical Center. “By increasing awareness and encouraging early screening, we can help people make informed decisions that support long-term wellness.”
The Lunch and Learn event reflects Haywood Regional Medical Center’s ongoing commitment to supporting community health through accessible education. The event is free and open to the public; lunch will be provided. Those interested in attending are encouraged to reserve a spot by contacting Lilly Ferguson at 828-508-0109 or lillian.ferguson@lifepointhealth.net.
