Construction is set to begin this month on a new sidewalk along Johnston Boulevard in West Asheville. The project will add approximately one mile of sidewalk to a main road, aiming to improve pedestrian mobility and safety. This initiative was identified as a priority by residents during public outreach for the 2016 bond referendum.

A community meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 18 at 5:30 p.m. at Johnston Elementary School. The meeting will take place in the school library and will offer nearby residents and others affected by construction an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the project.

According to city officials, “The goal of this project is to improve mobility, safety, and continuity for pedestrians and provide connections to local schools and parks. Notable user bases in this area include Johnston Elementary School, users of Roger Farmer Park, and the neighborhood residential and commercial areas.”

The construction is expected to last about 18 months. During this period, temporary lane closures will occur but are planned outside peak traffic hours. Clear signage and detours will be provided to help direct traffic safely around the work zone.

Residents should also expect construction noise during working hours. Efforts will be made by contractors to minimize disruptions and keep noise levels down. Construction equipment such as excavators, pavers, and trucks will be present in the area; people are advised to stay cautious near these vehicles.

Regular updates on the project’s progress will be sent via email to those subscribed on the project page.
