Asheville City government offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Despite the closure of city offices, certain services will continue to operate.
Sanitation collection services will run as scheduled from Monday to Thursday during the week of January 20, weather permitting. The Sanitation office itself will be closed on January 20. Any changes in collection due to weather conditions will be communicated through AVL Collects alerts and City media channels. Residents can sign up for these alerts via the AVL Collects app or at ashevillenc.gov/AVLcollects.
Residential brush collection remains limited to leaves or small sticks in paper bags or brush containers. Christmas trees will be collected for a limited time and should be placed away from storm debris. Storm debris operations are set to run normally on January 20.
ART bus service routes and facilities will follow a holiday schedule, equivalent to the Sunday schedule. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is one of seven days when ART operates on this schedule. For further route information or service alerts, residents can visit RidetheART.com.
Most Asheville Parks and Recreation (APR) parks and greenways are open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., although some remain closed due to damage from Tropical Storm Helene. Administrative offices and community center buildings are closed on this day. APR is co-hosting a day of service with Burton Street Community Association, Hood Huggers International, and RiverLink from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting at Burton Street Community Center.
The Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville will also be closed on January 20 but will resume normal business hours from Tuesday to Friday, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m ET. For event or ticket inquiries, individuals can contact hello@harrahscherokeecenterasheville.com.
The WNC Nature Center remains closed due to access road damage caused by Tropical Storm Helene; updates can be found at www.wildwnc.org.
The Asheville Municipal Golf Course will be open during regular hours for play on the back nine only, with tee times available at www.ashevillegc.com.
Water Resources staff will handle water-related emergencies throughout the holiday weekend around the clock; customers may report issues by calling 828-251-1122.
All public safety services including police, fire, and emergency response teams will maintain their usual operations — available 24/7 throughout the holiday period.
