Recent statistics presented at the Environment and Safety Committee meeting have revealed encouraging news for the city of Asheville. According to APD data, there has been a significant reduction in both property crimes and violent crimes compared to the same quarter in 2023.

Captain Aardema of the Asheville Police Department credited the positive outcomes to the agency's commitment to data-driven, proactive policing strategies, and active community engagement. He stated, "The comparisons are positive according to APD data. Statistics show an overall decrease in property crimes and violent crimes and property crime."

In addition to the decrease in crime rates, there has also been a notable improvement in the number of officers serving the city. The report highlighted that with 175 sworn officer positions now filled, the APD's vacancy rate has dropped to just over 27%. This marks a significant improvement from the vacancy rate of around 40% recorded in 2023.

The combination of reduced crime rates and increased officer presence reflects a positive trend in enhancing public safety and security in Asheville. Community members are encouraged to delve into the detailed statistics presented during the April 23, 2024, Environment and Safety Committee meeting to gain a comprehensive understanding of the city's progress in combating crime.
