City of Asheville staff are prepared to assist the community during any weather-related emergencies. Departments and personnel are ready to respond immediately to any issues that may arise.
The City advises residents to take steps now to prepare for cold weather throughout the season. "The snow and cold weather in the forecast are a great reminder that we all have personal responsibilities for our own safety and for those depending on us," stated city officials.
Asheville is using several platforms, including AVL Alert, its website, and social media channels like Facebook and X, to keep residents informed during emergencies. Residents are also encouraged to follow the Asheville Fire Department and Asheville Police Department on these platforms.
Public Works crews have begun applying salt brine to roads in preparation for winter conditions. They will continue salting as needed over the weekend to ensure safe travel. Water Resources personnel are on alert for potential impacts on water services, particularly concerning infrastructure.
All public safety services, including police, fire, and emergency response teams, remain operational 24/7.
Residents can sign up for AVL Alert, an emergency notification system that provides information via chosen communication methods. The service allows users to register up to five geographic locations within Asheville city limits and receive alerts in English and Spanish.
For family, home, and travel preparations during winter months, Water Resources recommends best practices to avoid frozen pipes. It is also important for residents to have an emergency supply kit ready for any type of disaster.
Additional tips can be obtained from Water Resources officers Clay Chandler and Kelley Klope. Code Purple resources are available through the community by following the Asheville Homeless Coalition on social media.
National readiness resources include Ready.gov, American Red Cross, and National Weather Service Forecasts.
