The Asheville region is bracing for significant winter weather this weekend, with forecasts predicting a substantial storm that could affect road conditions and traffic. The City of Asheville, already vulnerable due to Tropical Storm Helene, has taken precautionary measures to ensure community safety.

City offices will be closed for in-person services on January 10, 2025. However, staff will remain available to assist with the city's usual online services.

ART bus services will be suspended after 11:00 a.m. on January 10. If conditions improve by Saturday morning, ART services are expected to resume at 10:00 a.m. on January 11 and operate according to the regular schedule until 6:00 p.m. Updates regarding any further changes will be provided as necessary.

Community centers operated by Parks & Recreation will also be closed, and all programs are canceled. Although most parks and greenways remain open, residents are advised to exercise caution due to potential hazards such as fallen trees and icy patches. For updates on park closures, visit ashevillenc.gov/parks.

Water production staff will continue their operations around the clock, while water maintenance staff will handle emergencies 24 hours a day. Customers can report water-related issues by calling the customer service line at 828-251-1122.

Public safety services, including police, fire, and emergency response teams, will maintain their normal operations throughout this period.

With below-freezing temperatures anticipated over the weekend, residents are encouraged to take steps to prevent frozen pipes in their homes. Tips include disconnecting garden hoses, keeping garage doors closed if they contain water lines, opening cabinet doors near plumbing fixtures for warmer air circulation, wrapping pipes with insulation or heating tape, maintaining consistent thermostat settings day and night, closing windows near water pipes, covering vents to reduce drafts, and allowing cold water taps to run slightly during extreme cold.
