Cost of college went up for non-resident students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

In-state tuition and fees fell 0.2 percent for 2018-19 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

North Carolina residents paid $8,987 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $18 less than the $9,005 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 291.3 percent more than residents this year, or $35,170. Their price tag grew 1.7 percent from $34,588 in 2017-18.

About 82 percent of the school's undergraduate population are North Carolina residents. About 13 percent are residents of other states and 5 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 67 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 1,987 students received grants or scholarships totaling $34 million and 1,240 students took out student loans totaling more than $8 million.

Including all undergraduates (30,011), 10,043 students used grants or scholarships totaling $171 million, and 5,004 students took out $26.7 million in federal student loans.
