Kim Turner: A Dedicated Member of the Asheville Parks & Recreation Team

Kim Turner, a dedicated member of the Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) team, shared insights into her journey and contributions to the community in a recent interview. Turner's commitment to the department and passion for making a difference have been evident throughout her career.

Turner's tenure with APR began in 1995 as a summer camp counselor at Ira B. Jones Elementary. Over the years, she transitioned through various roles, including Recreation Specialist and East Asheville Community Center Director, showcasing her versatility and dedication to serving different populations within the community.

Reflecting on her motivation to join the team, Turner explained, "I graduated with a degree in Physical Education, but had worked summers with APR. Falling in love with the opportunity to directly impact children’s lives, I decided to make a career out of it."

When asked about her proudest accomplishments within the department, Turner highlighted her ability to impact diverse groups of people and the creation of Tiny Tykes Day, an event she initiated in 2007 that continues to flourish each May.

For Turner, working for the Asheville Parks & Recreation department holds deep personal significance. She expressed, "It means that everyday I get to make a difference." Turner also emphasized the professional growth she has experienced through her tenure, noting, "I have learned to trust and embrace myself... you don’t have to do everything yourself when you have a team of individuals who are willing to help if you just ask."

In conclusion, Turner encapsulated her dedication by stating, "It allows me the opportunity to be myself and impact people’s lives." Her unwavering commitment to enhancing the community through high-quality recreation programs and safe parks exemplifies the values upheld by the APR team.
