The City of Asheville will resume its regular schedule for brush collection services starting Monday, March 31. This service includes the collection of bagged leaves and properly contained brush trimmings. The city has reminded residents that storm debris and vegetative brush not meeting city guidelines will not be collected through the standard brush collection service. Contractors handling storm debris removal will continue their work until the final sweep is completed.
Residents should adhere to the following brush collection requirements: all brush trimmings must be placed curbside by 7 a.m. on the designated collection Monday; trimmings should avoid placement on storm drains or near utility structures such as guy wires and meter boxes; and brush piles need to be at least 5 feet away from structures like fences and mailboxes. Accepted containers include reusable ones marked "brush" or "leaves", weighing no more than 50 pounds and free from rainwater. Biodegradable paper yard waste bags should not exceed 25 pounds.
Certain items will not be collected, including tree trunks, stumps, or limbs larger than six inches in diameter, longer than four feet, or weighing more than 50 pounds. Thorny vegetation should be trimmed to lengths of two feet or less and kept separate from other trimmings. Grass clippings are not collected and should be kept apart from brush trimmings. Brush is collected on a bi-weekly basis. Residents can find their schedule and sign up for the free app, AVLcollects, through app stores.
Moreover, eligible storm debris not collected via the Right-of-Way (ROW) storm debris service may still be removed through the Private Property Debris Removal (PPDR) program. This program helps residents with storm-related debris removal exceeding standard collection limits. The application deadline for the PPDR program is April 15, 2025.
