The City of Asheville Sanitation Department has made significant progress in addressing the issue of bear-resistant solutions. With the recent announcement of ordering 340 additional bear-resistant trash carts and approving the use of Ultimate Trash Locks, the city marks a significant milestone in this endeavor.

The additional 340 bear-resistant trash carts have been purchased to be distributed to residents in need. According to the city, these carts will be provided to individuals on the waiting list based on their length of wait, ensuring a fair distribution process. Sanitation staff will reach out to residents on the waiting list over the next few months to confirm their address and interest in receiving a bear-resistant cart.

Jes Foster, the Sanitation Division Manager, expressed enthusiasm about the new solution, stating, "We are excited to bring this economical bear-resistant trash solution to the community." The Ultimate Trash Locks, which have been approved by the city, provide residents with the ability to retrofit their existing trash carts to make them bear-resistant. These locks have undergone testing at the WNC Nature Center and have proven effective in preventing wildlife access to the trash contents.

The Ultimate Trash Locks come with features such as multiple flexible and weather-resistant straps, quick installation with stainless steel nuts and bolts, and side-release buckles for easy access. However, residents are reminded to unbuckle the straps on sanitation days to facilitate easy access for sanitation staff during trash collection.

The initiative reflects the City of Asheville's commitment to addressing community needs and wildlife management challenges promptly. By expanding access to bear-resistant solutions, the city aims to enhance safety for both residents and wildlife while promoting responsible waste management practices.

Residents interested in joining the waiting list or obtaining more information about the bear-resistant solutions can visit the City of Asheville's website. Additionally, community members can directly purchase the Ultimate Trash Locks from the manufacturer to secure their existing trash carts against wildlife encounters.
