The City of Asheville has announced that Public Works Director Greg Shuler will be retiring effective July 31, 2024. City Manager Debra Campbell expressed her gratitude for Shuler's contributions, stating, "In his ten years serving in the role as department director of Public Works, Greg consistently improved and greatly enhanced the operations of the department. We are grateful for his service to the department but also for the collaborative manner in which he worked to improve our entire organization."

During his 16 years with the City of Asheville, Shuler has been instrumental in various projects and initiatives. He led projects such as the Pack Square Park Project and the Craven Street Road Improvements Project in partnership with New Belgium Brewing. Shuler also created an Asset Management Division of Public Works and modernized the City's fleet by incorporating electric and hybrid vehicles. Additionally, he implemented equitable hiring practices and secured funding for the development of a Solid Waste Master Plan.

Reflecting on his tenure, Shuler shared, "It’s been an honor to serve the community in various roles for so long. The dedicated staff in the Public Works department are truly amazing and should be lifted up. They carry out the dirty and often unrecognized work to help the City function every day and night. They have, and continue to inspire me." He also expressed appreciation for the City leadership and the hardworking staff, stating, "This City is fortunate to have some of the smartest, hardest working, and most dedicated staff. I will miss being able to work with them every day."

The City of Asheville will soon begin the search for a new Director of Public Works as Greg Shuler prepares for his retirement in July 2024.
