The City of Asheville is inviting residents to participate in local governance by serving on one of its many boards and commissions. These bodies, established by the Asheville City Council, allow citizens to provide input on various policies affecting the city. Currently, there are over 30 boards and commissions advising the Mayor and City Council on a range of issues.

Serving on a board or commission offers an opportunity for individuals to contribute their perspectives, leadership, and knowledge. However, it requires a significant personal commitment, so applicants should assess their ability to dedicate time and energy before applying.

Among the current openings is the Planning & Zoning Commission. This advisory board reviews proposed amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), zoning changes, and conducts studies related to land use, population, traffic, parking, and redevelopment needs. The Commission also formulates recommendations for comprehensive plans and reviews applications for planned unit developments.

Another opening is with the Housing Authority Board. This body reviews and approves budgets for submission to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), approves plans and specifications, awards contracts, and appoints the Executive Director of the Housing Authority.

Prospective applicants should determine which board or commission interests them. Meetings are open to the public, providing an opportunity for potential members to observe proceedings. Details about meeting dates, times, and locations can be found on individual web pages.

Applicants must be residents of Asheville unless otherwise specified by law or Council action. To apply, individuals need to complete a boards and commissions application form available online. Upon submission of an application, applicants will receive a confirmation email within one day; if not received, they should contact boards@ashevillenc.gov.

When vacancies arise, the City Council will review applications from a resource list and schedule interviews as necessary.
