Keith Whittington, a dedicated member of the Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) team, has been serving since October 1992. "I’ve always been a Park Warden, although it has also been referenced as Park Liaison and Park Enforcement Officer," he stated.

Whittington's career began after completing his service in the US Navy as an Air Traffic Control Specialist and Aviation Warfare Specialist. Initially aspiring to return as a federal park ranger at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, he faced challenges due to budget cuts following the Graham-Rudman-Hollings workforce reductions. "Outlooks weren’t looking good as far as landing back in a position there, so I began to look more local," he explained.

Among his notable achievements with APR, Whittington highlighted the development of riverfront parks and greenways. "It is rewarding watching many diverse populations come out and enjoy themselves with varying activities in the multitude of parks spread across city boundaries," he remarked.

Through his work with APR, Whittington has honed his public relations skills along with media and print communications. Outside of work, he enjoys reading, monitoring his weather station, astronomy, spending time at the lake, and undertaking simple home repairs.

Reflecting on his role at APR, Whittington said: "I work for Asheville Parks & Recreation because it provides the opportunity to work with the public – as well as various city departments – to expand upon and develop the socioeconomic community that is appealing for visitors and residents alike."

Opportunities to join Keith Whittington and other professionals at Asheville Parks & Recreation are available online.
