The Asheville Police Department has issued a warning to both residents and visitors to steer clear of parks and areas affected by flooding due to Hurricane Helene. The department emphasizes that these areas remain unsafe because of significant hazards.

Flood damage has rendered many parks and trails in the city dangerous. Risks include damaged infrastructure, unstable ground, hidden debris, poor lighting, and the absence of public facilities. Although some facilities have reopened, they may still be damaged and could lack adequate lighting during evening hours.

The police department advises the public to avoid entering closed parks and trails marked with closure signs or barriers. They recommend not going alone but rather with a companion for safety reasons. People should remain vigilant near flood-damaged zones as unstable terrain and hidden dangers might still exist.

All posted warnings and instructions should be followed since closures are implemented to protect public safety. The department encourages using the Asheville App to report any hazardous conditions observed.

Volunteer-led efforts to clear city parks and greenways are discouraged at this time. Planning and remediation efforts are ongoing, and only authorized personnel should conduct operations in these areas.

The Asheville Police Department expresses gratitude towards the community for their patience and cooperation as restoration efforts continue to safely reopen these valued spaces.
