The City of Asheville is preparing to unveil the renovated Memorial Stadium with a community fair and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event, scheduled for April 15, will feature the Asheville Sports and Fitness Fair starting at 5 p.m., followed by the official ribbon cutting at 6 p.m.

Mayor Esther Manheimer highlighted the significance of this renovation: “The renovations at Memorial Stadium reflect a meaningful investment in our community and a commitment to preserving this historic space for future generations. Through thoughtful planning and strong community involvement, we are creating a place where residents can come together, celebrate, and enjoy recreational opportunities for years to come.”

Tyrell McGirt, Director of Asheville Parks & Recreation, added: “We are thrilled to showcase the incredible range of sports and fitness opportunities available in Asheville in such a dynamic space as the recently-renovated Memorial Stadium. The investment in the stadium reflects our community’s commitment to health and recreation. We encourage everyone to celebrate Memorial Stadium’s legacy and discover new ways to move, connect, and thrive.”

The fair offers attendees an opportunity to explore various youth and adult sports leagues while engaging with organizations focused on active living. Interactive sessions will be held throughout the day.

Memorial Stadium was originally dedicated in 1927 as both a sporting venue and a tribute to city veterans. Funded by general obligation bonds approved by voters in 2016, recent renovations include upgrades like a walking track, artificial turf, improved accessibility features, restroom replacements, among others.

Adjacent Mountainside Park has also seen enhancements since 2020 with playground updates, redesigned entry areas, new swings, benches, paved paths, lighting improvements, natural shade trees planted for comfort.

Veterans planning to attend are encouraged to RSVP for reserved seating by April 14.
