The City of Asheville has announced its application for redesignation as a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC). This program, managed by the League of American Bicyclists, aims to enhance accessibility and enjoyment for bicyclists of all ages and abilities. Recognition as a BFC signifies the city's commitment to making bicycling safe and convenient for both transportation and recreation. The city received a bronze-level designation in 2020.

In conjunction with the BFC review process, the League of American Bicyclists seeks to understand local bicyclists' experiences in Asheville. Residents are invited to participate in the League’s public survey to share their experiences and suggestions for improving biking conditions in Asheville. Anonymous aggregate survey results will be included in the League’s feedback materials shared with the city later this year.

The survey is open until Tuesday, October 15th. A Spanish-language version is available upon request by emailing Amelia Neptune at amelia@bikeleague.org.

The BFC Award levels—Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum—are determined based on '5E' criteria. The program accommodates communities regardless of size, geography, demographics, socio-economics, politics, or current transportation patterns.

Results of the BFC award are expected to be announced in December.
