The City of Asheville's Transportation Department is preparing for its annual bike and pedestrian data collection, scheduled for the week following Labor Day. This initiative aims to gather data to identify trends in non-motorized transportation and support the implementation of the recently adopted GAP Plan. The department seeks volunteers for two distinct roles: bike and pedestrian count and greenway user survey collection.
Bike and Pedestrian Count Volunteers will be responsible for counting non-motorized users at specific locations on September 10th, 11th, 12th, and 14th. Weekday counts will occur from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with additional slots from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., while Saturday counts are set from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. No special skills or prior experience are required.
Greenway User Survey Collection Volunteers will conduct surveys on the Wilma Dykeman Greenway and Reed Creek Greenway during the same week. These surveys aim to capture information about user behavior and the economic impact of greenways. Surveys will be conducted on September 10th from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., as well as on September 14th from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and later from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
In case of rain, surveys scheduled for Tuesday will be moved to Thursday, September 12th.
Volunteers can sign up by clicking directly on the registration link or texting "2024count" to number "73224." While staff will try to accommodate location preferences, some flexibility may be necessary. There is no official deadline for signing up; however, assignments are hoped to be completed by early September.
After signing up, volunteers will receive confirmation emails with further instructions within several days. For any questions, Anna Sexton can be contacted at asexton@ashevillenc.gov.
