At their meeting on August 27, Asheville City Council adopted a resolution to donate used cell phones and computers to Land of Sky Regional Council. This donated technology will support Land of Sky’s program to shrink the digital divide in the region by increasing access to devices while efficiently disposing of surplus laptops and cell phones. Census data from 2021 shows that over 10% of the population in Buncombe County has no access to devices. Up to 250 laptops and 250 cell phones will be donated.

Land of Sky Regional Council will provide refurbished devices, training sessions, and repairs to individuals residing in Buncombe County without devices to enable their access to internet services. This could include persons in the following populations: low-income households, those that live in rural areas, older and aging residents, second-chance residents, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and those with language barriers.

Items that will be donated cannot be used by other city departments because they are outside of the enterprise lifespan or the warranty has expired. This partnership allows for increased access to educational opportunities and participation in local government while also diverting e-waste from landfills.
