The City of Asheville believes part of being a good partner with the community is keeping residents informed about various projects in and around the city. To this end, the city has created “The Progress Report” to share updates on ongoing projects.

WNC Nature Center Gateway to the Southern Appalachians Enhancement Project
Significant changes are coming to the Nature Center, including a renovated farmyard, an expanded gift shop, and a butterfly garden. In preparation for the next phase of construction, a section of the guest path in the barnyard and aviary area will be closed for several weeks. Visitors will still have access to view the aviary, and barn animals will be housed in a temporary corral across from the mining sluice. The Bear Boardwalk remains open, allowing guests access to other areas of the park.
McCormick Field Centennial Restoration and Capital Improvements Project
With groundbreaking taking place this week, improvements to McCormick Field are now underway. Construction will commence after Labor Day, transforming this facility into a year-round asset for both the community and baseball fans.
Patton Ave Sidewalks Accessibility Improvements Project
The city acknowledges that such an important undertaking in a vital and heavily trafficked area has implications for businesses and downtown visitors. The city appreciates continued patience and support as it works to improve public infrastructure along Patton Avenue.
Completed Work: Crews have removed and replaced approximately 700 feet of sidewalk beyond 109 Patton Ave (Patton Pets). They are currently working on the last North side stretch sidewalk in front of 115 Patton Ave (Salon Dragonfly).
Traffic Impacts: Current traffic control measures have shifted further west on Patton Ave. Efforts continue to reopen lanes when advisable in afternoons and on weekends to minimize disruption.
Upcoming Work: Crews anticipate replacing the remaining 40 feet of North side sidewalk in early September, weather permitting. Following this, work will begin on the ramp at 92 Patton Ave (near Thirsty Monk). Access at 92 Patton Ave will remain available for patrons. A sidewalk detour will stay in place for accessibility and safety reasons, with ongoing coordination with property owners and businesses.
