City of Asheville announces new Public Works Director

Asheville City Manager Debra Campbell has announced Dr. Tareq Al-Zabet as the City of Asheville’s next Public Works Director. Al-Zabet will officially begin his duties on September 16.

Al-Zabet is an executive with extensive leadership experience in overseeing comprehensive infrastructure services. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences and an Executive Certificate in Public Administration Leadership.

Before joining the City of Asheville, Al-Zabet served as the Chief Executive and General Manager of the Halifax Water Utility, where he managed an annual operational budget exceeding $1 billion.

In his new role, Al-Zabet will oversee a department that includes Stormwater, Streets, Sanitation, and Fleet.

“I am pleased to announce Dr. Tareq Al-Zabet as Asheville’s next Public Works Director,” said Campbell. “His exceptional leadership and extensive experience in managing large-scale infrastructure projects will guide our city’s public works initiatives. We look forward to the innovative solutions and expertise he will bring to our team as we continue to enhance Asheville’s infrastructure and public works services.”
