As the new year approaches, Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) has launched a challenge to keep residents engaged and active throughout January. The initiative encourages community members to complete various activities using a PARKS activity card, with opportunities to win prizes in February.
D. Tyrell McGirt, APR Director, emphasized the importance of setting achievable goals during this period. "At the start of the year, many people resolve to focus on self-improvement, change an aspect of their behavior, or accomplish a personal goal," he said. "The APR team has plenty of programs and activities to help with these resolutions."
The program is designed as part of the community's recovery efforts following significant disruptions caused by Helene. McGirt noted that it aims to provide "achievable, time-bound recreation options with incentives" for everyone in Asheville.
Participants can pick up or print an activity card from any APR community center. Activities range from registering for an APR program and visiting parks to volunteering on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and introducing oneself to new people through various recreational offerings.
Prizes are awarded based on the number of completed activities: a silicon wristband for 1-5 spaces, a waterproof phone pouch for 6-10 spaces, a tote bag for 11-15 spaces, a tumbler for 16-20 spaces, and a trucker hat for completing all 21-25 spaces.
Additional tips include signing up for APR's monthly newsletter or following them on social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram to stay informed about events and opportunities.
