APR Innovators is an Asheville Parks & Recreation series highlighting team members who contribute significantly to the community through their knowledge, connections, and insight. This series aims to showcase efforts in creating a better city through high-quality recreation programs and safe parks.

Jimmy Oliver joined the Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) team in 2021 as a Labor Crew Supervisor. His responsibilities include handling athletic fields and facilities, as well as mowing and landscape maintenance of parks on the east side of the city.

"I was drawn to government work because I wanted to contribute to positive change in Asheville and make a difference for our community," Oliver stated. "Also, my skills in turfgrass are directly applicable to APR’s mission, and I was excited to use them to contribute to public service."

Oliver takes pride in his accomplishments with APR. "I’m particularly proud of establishing a new standard for our athletic fields. The improvements we’ve made have had a significant impact on athletes and the overall community," he said. "Our team’s work to elevate the condition of our athletic fields is a highlight for me. We’ve set a new benchmark for facility excellence, and I’m thrilled with the positive outcomes."

On what it means personally to work for APR, Oliver noted: "Creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together."

Regarding his professional growth with APR, he mentioned taking on supervisory roles, developing leadership skills, and managing crews effectively.

Outside of work, Oliver enjoys disc golf and spending time on the course. He also loves checking out live music whenever possible.

When asked why he works for Asheville Parks & Recreation, Oliver concluded: "I believe in the importance of providing recreational opportunities for people of all ages, and I’m dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for our residents."
