John Shaw, a key member of Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR), has been recognized for his significant contributions to the community. Shaw joined APR in 2020 as a Labor Crew Coordinator and was promoted to Program and Operations Manager for the Asset Management division within six months. He oversees a team of 45-75 individuals who handle maintenance, repairs, landscaping, and various trades work.

Shaw's responsibilities extend beyond parks and centers; his team also maintains several City of Asheville properties not part of the APR system. "Most people may not know that over and above the parks and centers we take care of, we are also responsible for some City of Asheville properties that are not part of the APR system," he said.

Shaw's passion for field maintenance began with his parents' involvement in youth athletics programs. His career includes experience with Black Mountain Recreation & Parks and a local country club before joining APR. "When I saw the APR job posting, I jumped at the opportunity to return to the field I am most passionate about," Shaw explained.

He takes pride in his team's development and improvements made under his leadership. "I am proud of the team we have developed and all the improvements we have made to the parks and properties we manage," he noted.

Working with APR holds personal significance for Shaw. "It means I get to come to work every day and help make our parks safer and more enjoyable for everyone in our community," he stated.

Professionally, Shaw has benefited from certifications such as Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) and Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), among others provided by APR. These have enhanced his ability to serve the community effectively.

Outside work, Shaw enjoys family time, playing golf, and coaching youth sports. Reflecting on his role at APR, he said: "It gives me the opportunity to give back to the community that I love."

Asheville Parks & Recreation continues to seek dedicated professionals like John Shaw who contribute significantly towards building a strong, healthy community.
