Asheville Parks & Recreation's Therapeutic Recreation program marks its 20th anniversary in 2025, providing a variety of inclusive activities for participants. The program operates from the Murphy-Oakley Community Center, which recently introduced the city's first all-abilities playground.
Therapeutic Recreation (TR) is designed to use recreation and activity-based interests to address the needs of individuals with illnesses or disabling conditions. This approach aims to promote psychological and physical health, recovery, inclusion, and well-being. Recreational therapy is the practice within this field that focuses on restoring and rehabilitating a person's level of functioning and independence in life activities.
February is recognized as Recreational Therapy Month with this year's theme "More Than Fun," emphasizing how recreational therapy can enhance quality of life by reducing loneliness and isolation.
APR's TR programs are led by licensed professionals who aim to challenge limitations imposed on individuals with disabilities. These programs offer high-quality recreational activities that change seasonally.
One such offering is TR Baseball, starting May 3, in partnership with Asheville Tourists and T.C. Roberson Rams baseball programs. It caters to individuals with disabilities aged 6-17 and 18+, focusing on teaching baseball basics in a fun environment.
Other available programs include TR Adult Crafting sessions on Tuesdays, TR Adult Morning Movement on Wednesdays, TR After Dark events every third Friday of the month, as well as walking and hiking activities scheduled for March through May.
The community is encouraged to explore various therapeutic recreation opportunities provided by Asheville Parks & Recreation through their online platforms or sign up for their monthly newsletter for updates.
