North Carolina lawmakers have started filing paperwork to run for office in next year’s election.
First to file was state Sen. Mike Woodward, D-Durham, who is running for a fifth term.
Another Democrat, House Minority Leader Darren Jackson, also announced his candidacy.
“I’m so excited to share that today I officially filed for my seventh term in the North Carolina House of Representatives serving the people of District 39,” Jackson said in a statement posted on TheCenterSquare.com.
Republicans currently have the majority in the House of Representatives, holding 65 of its 120 seats.
Jackson has said he wants to flip control of the House to the Democratic party.
“I hope that in 2020, we can get back on track by taking the majority. If we want a shot at holding and flipping seats in competitive districts, we can’t waste any time,” Jackson said.
Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, is also seeking a second term in office.
