Our city is reinforcing its commitment to environmental restoration this Earth Month, particularly in light of the ongoing recovery from Tropical Storm Helene. The City of Asheville’s Sustainability Department is encouraging residents to participate in activities that enhance and restore the community's surroundings throughout April.
Ways to get involved include volunteering in community clean-ups. Asheville GreenWorks offers support for various initiatives such as DIY cleanups, StreamKeeper, and Coffee & Clean efforts, with opportunities to learn more and register online.
A notable event this month is the Explore Asheville Travel & Hospitality Earth Day Clean Up scheduled for April 22nd from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Additionally, Bountiful Cities is hosting workshops and workdays at community gardens and edible parks. Interested parties are advised to consult their calendar for further details.
Bee City is organizing events aimed at increasing awareness and support for pollinator habitats. There are also opportunities to attend free Home Energy Navigator sessions with Electrify Asheville Buncombe, which provide insights into energy efficiency and cost-saving electrification options.
For those inclined towards water-related projects, Riverlink’s WaterRICH guide can assist in initiatives like rainwater storage or building rain gardens. In addition, the area is observing Food Waste Reduction Month by encouraging practices such as buying appropriate food quantities, freezing leftovers, and composting.
Recycling efforts can be bolstered by participating in volunteer opportunities or attending Hard 2 Recycle Events. Virtually touring Curbie’s recycling center is also an option.
Finally, residents are encouraged to plant trees, an activity supported by Asheville GreenWorks. The month-long initiative is a call for residents to help restore natural beauty to the community, with appreciation for efforts to make Asheville a great place to live.
