Asheville Parks & Recreation is set to bring back its beloved Movies in the Park series, turning Pack Square Park in downtown Asheville into an open-air movie theater. Projected for family-friendly films under the stars, the event is scheduled on the second Friday of each month from May to August.
APR Director D. Tyrell McGirt describes the series as a key part of summer programming, highlighting its community-building aspect. “We’re excited to offer another season of free, family-friendly entertainment in the heart of our city, providing a perfect opportunity for neighbors to connect and create lasting memories.”
The screenings are set to start after dusk, around 8:25pm in May and August and 8:45pm in June and July. APR advises guests to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to showtime. Before the films, the "Rec n Roll Play Zone" opens an hour early, providing games, music, and activities catered to children and teenagers.
Kona Ice of Asheville and Kernel Mike’s World Famous Kettle Corn will be selling refreshments during all movie nights. In addition, Smasheville food truck will join the events in May, June, and August while Silly Willies Hot Dog Cart caters in July.
Attendees can find free parking in city-marked spaces and lots after 6pm. However, the event prohibits pets, smoking, and alcohol. The public is invited to dress as their favorite film characters for added fun.
Outdoor movie events depend on weather conditions. Cancellation announcements will be shared via APR’s social media channels.
Here are the films scheduled for the 2025 season:
- "Moana 2" on May 9, where attendees will receive leis.
- "Black Panther" on June 13, with superhero masks available.
- "Finding Nemo" on July 11, offering clownfish stress relievers.
- "Wicked" on August 8, featuring green or pink sunglasses.
Residents are encouraged to explore additional activities and programs provided by Asheville Parks & Recreation, including spots like parks and greenways around the city. It is advised to check their schedules, as many programs require prior registration.
