Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) has been running a series that shines a spotlight on team members who are making significant contributions to the community. One such individual is Jay Houston, who joined the APR team in November 2021 as the Youth Athletics Coordinator.

In his role, Houston is responsible for providing opportunities for local children to participate in athletic leagues and clinics. His duties range from creating teams and hosting evaluations to developing new programs and training youth coaches. Communication with parents and community members also falls under his purview.

Houston was drawn to join the APR team due to the opportunity it presented to provide high-quality youth programs in Asheville, as well as the chance to be part of a dedicated team at Asheville Parks & Recreation.

When asked about his proudest accomplishments with the department, Houston highlighted the growth he has seen in the children participating in their sports leagues. He finds it rewarding to see these young athletes develop not only on the playing fields and courts but also acquire valuable life skills such as sportsmanship, communication skills, and teamwork. Additionally, he takes pride in seeing the growth of their youth flag football program and youth/middle school basketball leagues.

Working for APR means being part of a great team and community for Houston. He believes that they have an opportunity each day to impact others positively.

Houston's professional growth through APR has been primarily through learning how to network effectively. He states: "I work for Asheville Parks & Recreation because…I enjoy helping kids. They are the next generation of leaders in our community."

Those interested in joining Houston and other parks and recreation professionals making significant impacts can find current opportunities with Asheville Parks & Recreation online.
