The City of Asheville has emphasized the importance of trees and their profound effect on the quality of life in the community. The city's commitment to this cause is reflected in its Urban Forester, Urban Forestry Commission, and Tree Canopy Preservation Ordinance. These initiatives are part of a comprehensive effort to preserve and enhance Asheville's mountain home.
The city's strategy includes promoting public health, safety, and welfare through tree preservation, planting, replacement, and removal options that do not infringe upon the reasonable use and enjoyment of real property. As part of this approach, various city departments including the Planning and Urban Design Department, Urban Forestry Commission, and other City of Asheville staff members have collaborated to create the Recommended Species List.
This list serves as a valuable resource for information about recommended trees as well as shrubs, grasses, and groundcovers. Since its implementation, the current tree canopy preservation ordinance has resulted in 2,473,521 square feet of canopy preserved versus 336,850 square feet of canopy planted for compliance. It should be noted that state rules established by the North Carolina State Assembly limit the City’s ability to regulate tree removal.
