Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) has announced a significant transformation for Carrier Park in West Asheville. The current wooden playground, built in 2001, is set to be replaced due to its age and the frequent repairs required to maintain safety.

Children and families are encouraged to enjoy the existing playground until mid-June. At that time, construction crews will begin removing the old structure and fencing off the area to install a new, modernized playground. This construction is expected to continue throughout the summer.

The new design will feature durable, environmentally-friendly recycled plastic lumber that mimics the appearance of wood but eliminates risks such as splinters and cuts. It also offers high resistance to water, pests, and rotting.

“Carrier Park sees more park users each year than any other park in the APR system,” said D. Tyrell McGirt, APR Director. “Easily accessible from West Asheville neighborhoods, French Broad River Greenway, the River Arts District, and the interstate, Asheville families have made many cherished memories on the playground over the years. This important investment ensures a new era of fun with safer materials, a similar look, and design that meets the community’s needs for years to come.”

Manufactured and installed by Play By Design, Carrier Park’s new playground will include various slides, spring riders, climbers, swings, and play areas designed to spark imagination and encourage healthy development for all children. Features such as the Konnection® Swing aim to facilitate intergenerational interaction while promoting cooperation and teamwork among younger children.

During construction, families can visit nearby APR playgrounds at Burton Street Community Center (1.5 miles), West Asheville Park (1.6 miles), Augusta Barnett Park (2.1 miles), Malvern Hills Park (2.2 miles), or Walton Street Park (3.1 miles).

This project marks APR’s eighth complete playground replacement since 2019. Following Murphy-Oakley Community Center’s new playground opening in June and planned investments at Burton Street Community Center next year, nine of APR’s 19 playgrounds will be brand new and modernized.

Carrier Park has a rich history of community involvement dating back to its first phase completion in 2003 with volunteer efforts contributing significantly during its initial build in 2001.

Carrier Park connects seamlessly with French Broad River Park, Amboy Riverfront Park via French Broad River Greenway as well as Buncombe County Parks & Recreation’s Hominy Creek River Park.
