Memorial Stadium in Asheville, North Carolina, stands as a historical landmark, originally dedicated to honor World War I veterans. Located near McCormick Field and several parks, the stadium has been a central part of the community since its opening in 1927. O. Max Gardner delivered the dedication speech at its inauguration, which included a football match between Presbyterian and Wake Forest colleges.

The stadium's history is marked by Asheville's rapid growth in the early 20th century and the subsequent economic challenges of the Great Depression. During this time, no new debts could be incurred without voter approval due to significant financial burdens on the city. Despite these constraints, Memorial Stadium served various community functions for decades.

In 1995, discussions about selling Memorial Stadium arose when a group proposed purchasing it for $1.4 million to develop a medical park. The idea was met with strong opposition from residents who valued the space as an essential public asset. Following extensive public input, City Council decided against selling the stadium.

A renewed focus on community investment led to improvements funded by a bond referendum approved in 2016. Renovations completed in 2025 included new artificial turf and other enhancements to maintain its role as a versatile sports venue.

Adjacent areas like Mountainside Park and Beaucatcher Overlook Park have also seen development over the years. Mountainside Park opened in 1978 with facilities for local families and received further updates recently. Beaucatcher Overlook Park emerged from efforts to preserve green spaces within Asheville.

Oakhurst Park is another example of community-driven development within Asheville's neighborhoods. It opened in 2020 after revitalization efforts aligned with its original design intentions.

Memorial Stadium continues to serve Asheville residents by providing opportunities for recreation and community events while preserving historical significance.
