Haywood Regional Medical Center has introduced Pro-Nox nitrous oxide as a new pain management option for laboring mothers. This addition aims to enhance the birthing experience by offering a safe, effective, and self-administered method for managing labor pain.
The Pro-Nox system allows patients to self-administer a 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen blend, commonly known as "laughing gas." This analgesic quickly blocks pain signals from reaching the brain, providing immediate relief while allowing patients to control their pain management during labor.
"We are thrilled to offer Pro-Nox as a valuable tool for our patients," said LaCrystal Gordon, DNP, RN, Chief Nursing Officer. "Our goal is to provide every mother with a range of pain management options to choose from, ensuring they can personalize their birthing experience."
Pro-Nox has been used safely in labor and delivery settings worldwide for decades. It complements existing pain relief options like epidurals and intravenous medications. The system is administered via a mask and lets the patient control the timing and dosage of the medication.
“As a physician, it's important to me that we provide our patients safe and effective pain management options,” said obstetrician Jenny Van Winkle, MD. “Pro-Nox gives women the opportunity to actively participate in their care.”
The rapid onset of relief from Pro-Nox allows women to interact with their support team and move around during labor. "We know that every woman has her own vision of what a positive birth experience looks like," said Gordon.
The introduction of Pro-Nox at HRMC reflects the hospital’s commitment to providing excellent care and prioritizing patient-centered care for expectant mothers.
