Haywood Regional Medical Center has introduced Maverick, a four-year-old Newfoundland therapy dog, to its volunteer program. Maverick is known for his gentle nature and affinity for people. He will offer comfort and companionship to patients, visitors, and staff at the hospital.

Owned by Connie Sovie, Maverick has a background in therapy work, particularly with children. He has spent significant time allowing children to read aloud while resting on his back, providing a calming presence. At HRMC, he will extend this warmth and soothing nature to patients regularly.

"Therapy animals have been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and even physical pain for patients," said HRMC CEO Chris Brown, RN. "We are excited to have Maverick join our team and look forward to the positive impact he will have on our hospital community."

The use of therapy animals in healthcare settings is well-documented for its benefits. Studies indicate that therapy dogs can lower blood pressure, reduce cortisol levels—a stress hormone—and increase endorphin release, promoting happiness and well-being. They also provide emotional support and enhance social interaction for patients facing long hospital stays or challenging treatments.

Maverick's visits are expected to offer emotional support, aid healing processes, and bring joy to those in need at HRMC. His presence will be particularly beneficial for patients undergoing treatment, families in waiting areas, and hardworking hospital staff.
